Carter Holt Harvey Latrobe Valley Timber Industry Unemployment | September 28, 2017
Gloomy day as Carter Holt Harvey closes
“It’s a sad and difficult day to see another timber industry business closing.”
That’s a reflection from The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath on the closure of the Carter Holt Harvey sawmill at Morwell today.
“The Andrews Labor Government said they would fight for every job, but this community continues to see job losses,” Ms Bath continued.
“Labor’s policies have forced a crisis in the forestry industry.”
Ms Bath expressed frustration on behalf of workers and wonders what opportunities for alternative work will be created.
“160 jobs are lost in the Latrobe Valley today. As we know, the job market is very tight in this area. How far are people going to have to travel to find work?”
“We’ve seen the Andrews government step in and assist Alcoa at Portland and now they’re buying the ASH timber mill at Heyfield. Where was the offer of support to Carter Holt Harvey to see if this business could have been saved?"
“It’s regrettable that a sawmill that processes plantation timber has to close. The products will still have to be made somewhere, but it’s more jobs lost in the Latrobe Valley.”
