Launch of Federation Training Yallourn bus service petition

A thorough assessment of Gippsland’s skills and training needs is needed to restore the confidence of local students and industry.

Nationals MPs say confidence in Federation Training is at such low ebb that a review of training in the region is required.

The call comes as Shadow Minister for Training and Skills and Deputy Leader of The Nationals Steph Ryan joined The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Region Melina Bath in Newborough today, to launch a petition protesting the axing of direct bus services to Federation Training’s Yallourn campus.

“Gippsland faces significant economic challenges and a worryingly high youth unemployment rate,” Ms Ryan said.

“Daniel Andrews has cut courses, sacked staff and closed key bus services to Federation Training."

Ms Ryan said Federation Training was receiving little support from the Andrews Labor Government to ensure it is skilling people in Gippsland to help them get work.

“A thorough, independent review that brings industry together to determine what skills we need over the next decade would help Federation Training tailor its course offering,” Ms Ryan added.

Ms Bath said the decision to close a key bus route to Federation Training’s Yallourn campus was the latest example of Labor riding roughshod over the community’s concerns.

Until earlier this year, the Route 1 bus to and from Traralgon and Morwell to Moe travelled via the Federation Training campus at Yallourn.

“Daniel Andrews is slowly strangling Federation Training,” Ms Bath said.

“I’m asking people to sign the petition to have the bus service to the Yallourn campus reinstated.”

“It’s now a 15 or 45 minute wait at a bus stop in Moe, or a three kilometre walk.”

“I wouldn’t fancy either in the middle of winter or the wet weather we’ve had the past week.”

Petition forms are available for signing at a number of businesses in Newborough, from Melina Bath’s office in Traralgon, or via the website here: www.melinabath.com.au/federation_training_yallourn_campus_bus_service_petition

Completed petition forms will be presented to parliament in February 2018.
