Urgent safety upgrades needed for Moe freeway pedestrian overpass

The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath has called on the Minister for Roads and Road Safety to urgently upgrade fencing and install CCTV on the M1 pedestrian overpass at Moe, following alarming reports of projectiles being hurled at passing trucks.

Ms Bath called for immediate action in state parliament after a Gippsland truck driver, who travels the route daily for work, reported incidents of rock-throwing targeting heavy vehicles over the past months.

“In one week recently, three trucks were struck by rock missiles on two consecutive nights, with one driver’s windscreen shattered, only to be hit again the following evening on the cabin roof.

“This is a deeply concerning and dangerous criminal activity that authorities are aware of – the Allan Government cannot sit on its hands and ignore it.”

“Throwing missiles at vehicles travelling at 110km/h has the potential to cause catastrophic accidents, serious injury or even death.”

Ms Bath told parliament that the current overpass fencing is inadequate as it allows large rocks to be thrown over the top or kicked through gaps.

“The perpetrators are long gone by the time police arrive, and with limited resources, Victoria Police is unable to respond effectively.

“Truck drivers are so aware of the danger they’ve created an informal communication system to warn each other; but this is not a solution.

Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron said the pedestrian freeway overpass requires proper infrastructure and surveillance to protect all road users – the fencing has been a source of concern for years.

“The Allan Government must upgrade the inappropriate fencing with a secure barrier in an acceptable timeframe.

“The installation of CCTV monitored by Victoria Police would help identify alleged offenders and address this wicked practice.

“The situation demands immediate action – Labor must ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.”
