As we enter summer, The Nationals’ Melina Bath is calling on locals to make sure their property is bushfire ready.
Ms Bath said after several milder, wetter years, an abundance of spring rain and not enough forest fuel reduction activity there is an abundance of fuel in state forests and national parks within eastern Victoria.
“Areas of heightened concern include the Latrobe District which is home to Latrobe Valley, West Gippsland and parts of South Gippsland and the Yarra District which includes the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley.
“Don’t let the cooler, wet weather draw you into a false sense of security – once the high fuel load dries out on public land there is a higher than average risk of bushfires this summer.
“Any preparation and clean up around the home completed now will make a real difference – just because you live in town doesn’t mean you are not susceptible to bushfire as embers can travel up to 20 kilometres.
“Activities such as clearing gutters, sealing gaps and removing fine fuels are necessary even if you live some distance from bushland.”
Ms Bath is encouraging residents to review their Bushfire Survival Plan with their family which should include pets and livestock.
“Knowing when to leave and where to go is just as important as preparing your property – share your plans with your extended family and friends so they are aware of your intended actions in the event of bushfire,” said Ms Bath.
“Our CFA volunteers do an incredible job, but they can’t do it alone – every one of us has a role to play in reducing risk and staying prepared.
“Please take warnings seriously, stay informed via the VicEmergency app or local radio and act early if fire is near your area.
“By preparing now, we give ourselves, our loved ones and our communities the best chance of getting through this fire season safely.”
