Backing Victoria’s Fishing Future

The Nationals’ Melina Bath has reaffirmed her support for Victoria’s commercial and recreational fishing sectors following a firsthand visit to San Remo with industry leaders, angling representatives and food advocates.

Speaking after the visit, Ms Bath, who is also the Shadow Minister for Outdoor Recreation, highlighted the importance of the seafood sector to regional communities, local jobs and the state’s food security.

“Spending time on the water along the Bass Coast and hearing directly from fishers and industry experts was an invaluable experience,” Ms Bath said.

“Victoria’s seafood industry delivers fresh, local produce, supports regional jobs and remains vital to our state’s future.”

The visit showcased how commercial and community-based fishing operate side by side, with both contributing to Victoria’s culture, economy and way of life.

“Commercial and community fishing are both vital and should thrive together,” Ms Bath said.

“Fishing for leisure supports wellbeing, families and regional communities, while commercial fishers play a critical role in supplying sustainable, high-quality seafood to Victorian households and businesses.”

Ms Bath said strong community support for locally sourced seafood reinforced the need to back the sector.

“We’re focused on protecting sustainability, supporting local producers and ensuring Victorians continue to have access to nutritious, responsibly sourced seafood.”

“Any changes to legislation must safeguard the sustainability of wild harvest species, supported by healthy marine ecosystems and adequately resourced fisheries officers.

“The visit reinforced the importance of a balanced approach that supports both sectors while protecting marine environments.

“This is about backing Victorian fishers, supporting coastal communities and ensuring our seafood industry continues to thrive for generations to come.

“I thank Wolfgang Platzer, Matt Wassnig, Craig Martin and Amanda Keilar for the opportunity to experience the sector firsthand and share their insights.”
