Bushfire recovery kits commenced distribution into East Gippsland today after being generously sponsored by individuals, business and community organisations.
The Bushfire Recovery Kits contain replacement equipment to assist East Gippsland bushfire victims who lost their homes and sheds during summer.
The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Region Melina Bath and Andrew Graham of H Hardware in Traralgon launched the program in late January following the devastating East Gippsland bushfires.
Ms Bath said the fundraising initiative provides much needed practical support and delivers necessary basic essentials to assist locals get back on their feet.
“Initially our focus was on attracting sponsors for the kits, to date over $13,000 has been donated from all over Victoria and interstate.”
Ms Bath said she was delighted that distribution has commenced thanks to an innovative partnership between charity GIVIT and Gippsland Lakes Complete Health.
“GIVIT recently contacted us and generously sponsored an impressive 10 bushfire recovery kits,” said Ms Bath.
“Gippsland Lakes Complete Health Case Managers are working on the ground in East Gippsland to identify recipients and distribute the goods.”
Over 300 homes and/or sheds were lost this summer in East Gippsland and property owners continue to face a mammoth clean up task.
Ms Bath said the path to recovery is ongoing and is highly challenging for those affected.
“With much focus on Covid-19 in Victoria, these kits are important way of showing East Gippslanders we haven’t forgotten them as they continue to face many challenges around rebuilding,” said Ms Bath.
“While kits are being distributed, we are aware more will be required, so we are continuing to encourage and accept sponsorship.”
The Bushfire Recovery Kits can be purchased through one of the participating hardware stores at a cost of $330, with a retail value of $586.
Ms Bath said this program which started as the brainchild of one Traralgon small business owner, has successfully built a collaborative community partnership.
“I congratulate Andrew and his team at H Hardware Traralgon, GIVIT and Gippsland Lakes Complete Health for supporting this wonderful program and assisting Gippsland families in need,” said Ms Bath.
