Local Transport Volunteers Recognised During National Volunteer Week

The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath, has recognised the extraordinary contribution of volunteers across the region during National Volunteer Week at a luncheon celebrating the Royal Flying Doctor Community Transport (RFDCT) program in Foster.

Established in 2023, the Foster branch has seen local volunteer drivers play a vital role in helping people in South Gippsland access essential healthcare and services where transport can often be a barrier.

“Volunteers are the backbone of this program,” Ms Bath said.

“They don’t just provide a lift. They offer connection, reassurance and a friendly face for people who may otherwise feel isolated.

“For many clients, these journeys are about more than attending appointments – they are moments of genuine human connection, offering a conversation, a shared story and the comfort of knowing someone cares.”

Ms Bath said the service enriched the lives of both volunteer drivers and the people they support in deeply meaningful ways.

“In the past 12 months alone, the Foster service has travelled more than 265,000 kilometres across 6,800 trips, supporting around 5,200 patients to access the care they need.

“These remarkable efforts highlight the scale of impact our volunteers have in our community.”

Ms Bath said it was important to thank all volunteers who continue to invest in the wellbeing and resilience of regional Victoria.

“National Volunteer Week is an important opportunity to recognise and thank all those across our communities who give their time so selflessly.

“Volunteers make a real and lasting difference in people’s lives every day.”
