The loss of Phillip Island’s iconic MotoGP event to Adelaide is yet another glaring failure of the Allan Labor Government, and its inability to safeguard major events and support regional Victorians.
The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath in State Parliament has demanded the Allan Government urgently meet with key stakeholders to address the devastating economic impact on the Bass Coast community.
Ms Bath said Labor must be held accountable for another major international sporting fiasco with wide reaching implications.
“First, we had the Commonwealth Games debacle, now we have the loss of the highly successful Phillip Island MotoGP, regional Victorians deserve so much better.
“It beggars belief that an event drawing record breaking crowds, loved by riders, injecting more than $50 million into Bass Coast’s visitor economy and supporting a multitude of small businesses was allowed to be poached.
“Labor’s offer was clearly inadequate and a case of too little, too late.
“It should never have come down to a last minute bidding crisis – the MotoGP should have been secured many months ago.
“Labor can’t manage money, can’t manage major events – and now the Bass Coast community is paying the price.”
