Comments from Melina Bath Member for Eastern Victoria Region in reply to media discussion regarding Yallourn power station:
“Our community lost 750 highly-skilled jobs when the Andrews Labor Government failed to stop the closure of Hazelwood power station in March.
Reports today that Daniel Andrews won’t rule out closing another one of the Latrobe Valley’s major employers, Yallourn power station, to meet his unrealistic Victorian Renewable Energy Target (VRET) is a kick in the guts.
Three Latrobe Valley coal power stations supply approximately 83 per cent of the current power mix – with 17 per cent produced by renewables.
If Labor continues to push ahead with its unrealistic VRET, Daniel Andrews will oversee the closure of another Latrobe Valley power station and more job losses.
An elected Liberal Nationals government would prioritise energy security and affordability and work to secure jobs in the Latrobe Valley.
Under Daniel Andrews, the priority is always greens preferences and saving the jobs of his inner-city MPs.”
