Today’s Allan Labor Government announcement on the cancelled Commonwealth Games has been labelled a rehash that provides the Gippsland community nothing new says The Nationals.
Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron said the community is justifiably sceptical given this ‘announcement’ is nothing but a repeat of previous promises with no actions, no details, and no timelines.
“There is no substance or new information, and our Latrobe Valley community don’t know any more now than we did eight months ago when Labor shockingly cancelled the Games.
“The Latrobe Valley has been cheated time and time again, and all Labor has left in its wake is a trail of failed investments and broken promises.”
During the Parliamentary Inquiry into the 2026 Commonwealth Games Bid public hearing held last week in the Latrobe Valley, locals expressed their frustration and anger at the State Government for having wasted their time, money, raising expectations and trashing Victoria’s international reputation.
The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath said only four days ago Latrobe Valley community groups lamented Labor’s appalling track record, calling out its lack of consultation in respect to promised sports and housing legacy projects.
“What’s change in four days? – nothing; Labor’s latest announcement is all headline with no deadline or funding”, said Ms Bath.
“Instead of providing certainty the Labor government is scrambling to manage perceptions.
“This announcement is a damage control exercise, made without consultation with our local sporting organisations.
